The Rough Ridge trail--actually a section of the Tanawha Trail that closely follows the Blue Ridge Parkway for several miles--is easily accessed from a convenient overlook.  This section of the trail ascends a shoulder of Grandfather Mountain and provides something of an "above it all" view  of the surrounding peaks, as well as a unique perspective on the iconic Linn Cove Viaduct farther south on the Parkway. 

The obvious ruggedness of Grandfather Mountain often belies the fragile nature of the flora the mountain supports, much of it unusual at this latitude, some of it listed as rare and endangered. The Rough Ridge trail draws attention to this fragility, incorporating a series of boardwalks to protect the mountain's vegetation from damage and erosion that would otherwise result from the impact of thousands of trampling feet.  The almost constant breezes, the feeling of western-like openness attributable to plant life stunted by wind and cold, and the seemingly endless cascade of distant ridges combine to make Rough Ridge an excellent spot from which to enjoy and reflect on the peace and order inherent in nature.  It is a beautiful area at any time of day, but I especially  enjoy Rough Ridge at sunrise, when the first sunbeams peek over distant mountains, warming the massive rock outcroppings, bathing the low-growing plant life in the glow of early light, and awakening the mountain's population of birds and other small creatures to the opportunities and struggles of a new day.  Nature's early morning display lasts only a few brief minutes, but its beauty lingers long in the memory of those fortunate enough to experience her show firsthand.
